Introduction to the main theories of economic growth (neoclassical growth - Solow; endogenous growth - Romer; semi-endogenous growth - Jones), Introduction to a model-based empirical assessment of the determinants of economic growth. Application of the models to explain cross-country income differences.
After taking the course students will be able to understand the basics of economic growth theory (neoclassical growth theory, endogenous growth theory, and semi-endogenous growth theory) and apply them in an empirical context.
Since personal interaction is important in this course, attendance and active participation are necessary. Thus, attendance is compulsory for at least (80%) of the sessions. This holds true in the case of an on-campus mode as well as in the case of online teaching. In particular, attendance is necessary in the first meeting, the presentations in the exercise and seminar parts, and at the final exam.
The course is composed of three parts.
The first part is a set of lectures on growth theory. This is followed by exercises that students prepare and present in class (group homework). In this part, students apply the theory in a given context. In the third part, students prepare and present a term paper (group work).
Final exam (40%), presentation of the exercises (30%), and presentation of the term paper (30%). For passing the course, achieving 50% is necessary.
After the registration period, students from the waiting list, who do not yet have a valid registration, will be assigned to available places in the specific courses on a first-come-first-served principle. Students with a valid registration who cannot participate need to unregister so that the place is available for somebody else.
