This research seminar is designed around a series of research presentations, contextualisations and PhD workshops by distinguished scholars from around the world and WU Department of Management faculty. It is meant 1) to expose students to diverse management topics, theories, and methodological approaches, 2) to share practical hands-on experience on specific topics and 3) to provide an opportunity to engage in scholarly discourse and networking.
Workshops as more informal discussions held after each research presentation provide students with a more intimate setting to share their own experiences as young scholars.
The seminar is intended to provide a forum for students to interact with and discuss research with their peers and senior scholars. Students will gain first-hand insights into scientific research and to deepen their knowledge of different approaches to theoretical and empirical research. At the end of the seminar, students will be expected to know:
- Gain a broad understanding of management theories and conducting academic research
- Enhance knowledge of how to develop a clear and concise line of research, how to identify and articulate a research question, how to select an appropriate research design and methodology, and how to communicate a research project to an academic audience
- Develop skills in providing thoughtful and constructive feedback
- Deepen understanding of what it means to be an “academic” and pursue a career in academia
- Gain tacit knowledge and learn from the experiences of distinguished scholars
- Presentations of research papers
- Presentations on specific academic topics

Attendance and Participation (30%): Attendance is a firm requirement of the course, as it is designed around engaging in scholarly discussions, being exposed to diverse topics and methodologies, and networking with scholars within and outside the Department. Students are expected to come prepared to actively participate in discussions and to make the most out of every opportunity to interact with colleagues and invited speakers.
Academic Paper Presentation (35%): Students are required to present their personal "Hero-Publication" to their fellow students and discuss it. This "Hero-Publication", can be a scholarly publication by any other author of any format (paper, essay, book, etc.), that the students consider to be most thought-provoking and most influential for their own research journey. The purpose of the presentation of an academic paper as an assignment is to give the students the opportunity to actively reflect upon their own interests and positions as a researcher. Active engagement in the other participants` presentations, including participating in the discussions is expected.
Final Assignment (35%): The purpose of the written final assignment is to give students the opportunity to reflect what they have learned through the course. The topic and tasks of the assignment will be reflecting upon the contents of the Research Seminar for the own dissertation project and writing a reflection report on what they personally have learned from the presentations of invited speakers and during the scholarly discussions.
