The course investigates various aspects of sustainable logistics, taking into account economic, ecological and social components. The central question is how logistics can be made more sustainable. Topics such as sustainable mobility, city logistics, the circular economy, public transport and the shift of transportation to rail are covered.
As sustainable logistics involves numerous conflicting objectives, we integrate operations research methods in order to explicitly incorporate sustainable objectives into logistics problems.
This field is extremely dynamic, as new regulations and recommendations regularly emerge. This represents a major challenge for many companies. At the same time, there is growing pressure from customers and investors to operate more sustainably. In order to incorporate a practical perspective, we discuss current topics such as the modal shift or sustainability reporting with company representatives.
The course deals with both strategic issues, such as network planning, and operational decisions, such as tour planning.

Learning outcomes

After this course the students will be able

- Analyze the central challenges and conflicting objectives of sustainable logistics from an economic, ecological and social perspective.
- Apply operations research methods for the sustainable optimization of logistics processes.
- Evaluate strategic, tactical and operational measures for sustainable logistics
- Develop, discuss and critically reflect on practical examples in groups
- Critically evaluate scientific publications

Attendance requirements

Attendance in the first lecture is mandatory for the participation in the course. If an absence cannot be avoided inform the lecturer  before class and provide some form of proof for the absence (e.g. medical confirmation) in the next session. In total, a minimum requirement for attendance of 80% is required to pass the course.

If the attendance falls below 80% for students receiving partial credit, students are graded with 5 (Nicht genügend).

Teaching/learning method(s)

Lecture with active participation including in class examples and case studies, assignments and presentations

Assessment

  • Group Assignments 25%
  • In-class participation 10%
  • Quizzes 25%
  • Final exam 40%

Lectures start punctually. In case of in-class assignments, be aware that they are most likely to take place at the beginning of a lecture. If students are absent during the in-class assignments no make-up assignments are granted.

Cooperation with other students on homework assignments is encouraged. However, the final write-up must be done individually. ‘Duplicate’ homework write-ups are unacceptable and will receive a score of zero. (Any homework that is late will receive a score of zero.). Quiz and final exam are closed book examinations.

The use of AI tools of any kind for course work assignments must be documented and declared in a statement in the introduction to documents submitted for assessment (e.g., texts, presentation slides, video/audio materials).
