The writing retreat is the perfect opportunity to get off for three days, to intensively work on your next publication (journal paper, conference paper or book chapter), to get multiple rounds of feedback and support from experienced scholars. The course targets PhD students who have already taken beginners courses on academic writing and who currently work on an academic publication.
The writing retreat will take place on November 22nd - 24th off-campus about one hour from Vienna in Reichenau an der Rax (at https://parkhotelhirschwang.at/ estimated costs around 400 Euro for two nights and three days full board in a single room). We will reserve your room and you will pay on-site, cancellation fees apply when you cancel your participation on short notice.
It provides a writer’s friendly environment and allows concentrating on the writing task without any distractions and with no pressure. This will help you to overcome the challenges of being frequently distracted by other tasks and to ensure that you make substantial progress on your paper.
You will substantially improve your writing skills and your paper. In particular you will
- pursue and potentially finalize a concrete writing project
- learn how to transfer insights gained from the writing retreat to your daily routine of writing
- reflecting on your writing
- network and exchange writing experiences with peers
During the writing retreat, students will receive multiple rounds of feedback and attend individual coaching sessions with experienced writers, to make significant progress during the three days. You will also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with your colleagues.
This is what our students from last semester said:
“Great format – three consecutive days made progress really easy”
“The coaching was admirably on point and very helpful to the tasks at hand”
“The atmosphere was great, the charismatic teachers sparked motivation in all students, resulting in a great working atmosphere”
You should have already taken a basic course in academic writing. As a starting point for the retreat, you should have completed your background research and/or data analysis and have an extended abstract at hand (do be submitted at least three days before the retreat).
